Delora sat at her writing desk, scribbling at high speed.

Ever since the party at the Pulteney Hotel, Princess Charlotte had been in a daze.

Not the depressing type like last year, but a dreamy one.

Princess Charlotte would hum little tunes, sometimes twirling and swaying by herself in the house. She sighed often, only with a serene and sweet smile.

After their dance at the party, Princess Charlotte had invited Lieutenant-General Leopold to visit her. And he did.

He showed up two days later. The two went out to the forest on their horses, with Delora riding beside them on Nova.

Lieutenant-General Leopold had revealed that he was Prince Leopold, son of Duke Francis of Saxe-Coburg-Saafeld of the Holy Roman Empire. But because he was the youngest son of the duke and thus low on funds, he found that title unnecessary and had been referring to himself by his military title.

Princess Charlotte didn’t seem to mind his impoverished state at all. Cheeks in a natural rosy hue, Princess Charlotte chatted with him with great delight.

In contrast to Princess Charlotte’s exuberant personality, Prince Leopold’s presence possessed a calming effect. Every smile he made and every word he spoke left Princess Charlotte in a dreamy trance.

Their meeting lasted for three-quarters of an hour. Concerned and precautious about any rumors that might circulate against Princess Charlotte, an engaged princess, Prince Leopold suggested they shouldn’t meet for too long. He politely excused himself.

Though reluctant, Princess Charlotte agreed and bid him farewell.

Delora watched them from the beginning to the end.

She had never seen Princess Charlotte so…so…

Different.

Or in Lady de Clifford’s words: she had never seen Princess Charlotte behaving so lady-like.

And Delora agreed. The Princess was certainly behaving like a love-struck little girl ever since she met Prince Leopold.

This must be the so-called fateful encounter.

Occasionally, she would hear Princess Charlotte talking to herself. “Could this be fate?” she would say. Also, “I wish I could be the breeze that blows through his brown, wavy hair. I could drown in his beautiful brown eyes,” or “Could he be my Mr. Darcy? Or perhaps, Mr. Bingley?”

Princess Charlotte changed her mood the same way she read Jane Austen’s books: fast. One moment, she’d sing and dance around the house like a butterfly in the rose garden. Then she’d fall into a deep depression, remembering her formal engagement with Prince William and doubting she even had a choice anymore.

Delora’s hand stopped. She stared hard at the letter in front of her.

Should she even be telling Lord Astrophel about Prince Leopold? Could Princess Charlotte still have a chance for a better marriage candidate?

Her heart ached for the Princess. Delora would want nothing but true happiness for Princess Charlotte. Unlike Prince William of Orange, Prince Leopold seemed like a true gentleman.

Oh, a true gentleman, he certainly is, Delora thought in admiration.

After their ride in the forest, Prince Leopold never visited or contacted Princess Charlotte again, giving no chance for any naughty rumors to bud.

Delora resumed writing again, determined to inform everything to Lord Astrophel. Perhaps he would take the hint.
